With the elimination of the Torino, Ford could no longer build the Ranchero. As a potential replacement for that iconic model, Ford had a pilot series car-based pickups built on their newly introduced Fairmont Futura. Although they were well received, Ford wasn’t in a position to tool up for a this new model and, thus, only 212 were ever built. As a result, the Ford Fairmont Durango is not only one of the coolest little pickups made, it’s one of the most rare also.

I bought this example from Arizona a few years ago. Not only is it rust free, it is still wearing its original paint. Of course it is faded and scratched in areas from use and exposure to the sun but the highly vaunted patina on this car is 100% genuine. The original six cylinder engine and automatic transmission were rebuilt within the past twenty thousand miles and function perfectly. There are no leaks. I’ve used it sparingly in the summers as a utility vehicle for my hobby garage and it has served us well with a lot of style. It will need tires and brakes soon but those are inexpensive wear items.

Again, you will be hard-pressed to find a cooler little truck anywhere. Despite its rarity, it has the reliability and low maintenance cost of a mainstream American car of its period. My only reason for selling is that I have found another unique little truck to play with for awhile.

As always the price is somewhat negotiable but please, no lowball offers without personally inspecting the car. Speaking of personal or professional inspection, I encourage it. I will consider trades but they would have to be very, very special. I’m not afraid to trade up but again, no run-of-the-mill iron please.
